Zonar Ushers in a New Era of Fleet Management Technology with Zonar Connect
ELD-Ready Smart Fleet Tablet and Seamless Software Platform Allows Fleets to Customize and Upgrade for Future Growth
Seattle Wash. – October 1, 2016 – Zonar, the leader in smart fleet management technology, today announced Zonar ConnectTM, a next generation tablet and software ecosystem that empowers commercial fleets to take greater control of their operations. Connect allows fleets to seamlessly enter the next era in fleet management technology using a smart fleet platform which is faster, more responsive, readily customizable and more user-friendly than current solutions in the commercial fleet marketplace. This ruggedized, high-performance, easy-to-use tablet delivers management tools for commercial vehicle operations including compliance, safety and efficiency monitoring.
“We are entering an age in connected commercial vehicles where the capabilities go beyond the individual vehicle and extend to fleet management and industry decisions regarding job bidding, safety, efficiency and compliance,” said Ian McKerlich, President of Zonar. “Connect is designed to exceed industry needs with Electronic Logging Device (ELD) readiness, Electronic Verified Inspection Reporting (EVIR) and a growing number of apps built in a scalable environment to address needs further down the road. We believe that Connect is the path forward for designing and delivering the next generation of solutions for the smart fleet management era.”
Connect is always connected whether it is docked or undocked representing a significant milestone in smart fleet management. For example, a driver can submit a completed EVIR inspection back to dispatch without returning to the cab of the truck. The tablet-based platform further connects vehicles, driver/operators and fleet managers with critical information such as vehicle health, efficiency, driver hours of service, performance, data capture, compliance, safety and asset utilization.
“Just as smartphones have become an integral part of our daily lives, you soon won’t be able to run your fleet operations efficiently without a smart fleet technology like Connect,” said Brett Brinton, co-founder and CEO of Zonar. “Connect will help operators manage their fleets more effectively as technology changes with hardware that supports over-the-air updates to give them greater flexibility and scalability to grow.”
Connect has the ease of use of everyday consumer devices with the power and ruggedization needed for commercial vehicles. With it, drivers and operators can streamline daily tasks, such as pre- and post-trip inspections; hours of service logging with Roadside ViewTM for compliance inspections; communicating with fleet management; documenting deliveries; navigating routes and – in the case of passenger services – verifying ridership. The tablet also equips drivers and operators with tools that ensure adherence to a broad range of safety and compliance regulations.
Key features:
“Zonar Connect tablet and platform represent an extremely compelling offer for fleet managers across a variety of industry verticals,” said Clem Driscoll, president of consulting and research firm C.J. Driscoll & Associates. “It’s a very rugged, state-of-the-art piece of hardware connected to a software ecosystem that offers new flexibility for customers to add third-party apps and upgrade easily as technology advances. It’s clear that Zonar listened to customers and upgraded an already-compelling product based on what they learned.”

Winter Tire Test: Some Treads Are Better Than Others
By Bruce W. Smith
Every so often I find myself checking out the tires of the vehicles around me when stopped in traffic, wondering how this or that one performs compared to the factory tires on my pickup truck. My questions become even more pointed in winter: Should I invest in a set of winter tires? Would mud tires be a good choice or all-terrain? Would it be worth the investment to buy a dedicated snow tire and run them half the year?
To find out, we went to the snow-covered hills just a few miles outside Steamboat Springs, Colo. Carved into the deep snow were three perfectly groomed snow courses with big berms and a variety of twists, turns and elevation changes. These tracks are the training grounds for the Bridgestone Winter Driving School. They also serve as the perfect location to test tires — and for us to see how popular pickup tire tread patterns compare when pitted against each other under controlled winter driving conditions.
And even though it's spring, the information we're offering here should help you decide what kind of tires you want next winter.
The Contenders
We spent two days this past winter with Woody Rogers and T.J. Campbell, product information specialists for Tire Rack, comparing popular 275/65R18 tires on a twisting, curving half-mile section of track three behind the wheel of two identical 2016 Ford F-150 4x4s. The tire comparison contenders were:
- Goodyear Wrangler Fortitude HT OWL SL (P-metric)
- Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2 SL (P-metric)
- Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT LT (E load range)
- BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 RWL LT (C load range)
- Firestone Destination MT LT (E load range)

THE ALL-NEW FORD F-150 RAPTOR TACKLES BAJA 1000, THEN DRIVES THE LONG WAY HOME
- A fully street-legal stock 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor completed the 49th SCORE Baja 1000 in 35:59:08 – placing third overall in the stock full class competition – the same truck that is now headed to Ford dealers.
- Ford Performance and Greg Foutz Motorsports raced a pre-production 2017 F-150 Raptor – the toughest, smartest, most capable Raptor ever – full-tilt across 850 miles of rocks, potholes and miles and miles of sand and dust
- Having proven its robustness and performance as part of the Ford Performance team’s validation process for the new Raptor, Foutz and crew tossed their tools in the back of the race Raptor and drove it nearly 400 miles to their home base outside of Phoenix, AZ
DEARBORN, Nov. 29, 2016 – As Ford starts sales of the all-new 2017 F-150 Raptor, the Ford Performance team completed one final grueling endurance test – running in the 49th SCORE Baja 1000 across the famed desert in the Baja California peninsula in Mexico.
Led by Greg Foutz and the team from Foutz Motorsports, the 2017 F-150 Raptor finished the race in 35 hours, 59 minutes and 8 seconds to place third in the stock full class. Then, the crew decided to toss their tools and spare tires in the back of the race truck and drove it back to their home shop near Phoenix.
“That’s why the new Ford F-150 Raptor is bad-ass! It’s a race-proven off-road monster that can race off-road an entire weekend, then take you and your friends on a road trip the next day,” Foutz said. “That and the $49,520 starting price make it a clear winner on the showroom floor.”
Powered by an all-new high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 engine that delivers 450 horsepower and 510 lb.-ft. of torque, plus an all-new Ford-built 10-speed transmission, the F-150 Raptor race truck showcases the level of performance this purpose-built off-road vehicle will deliver to customers once it goes on sale in December.
Given the 2017 F-150 Raptor’s extreme all-terrain capabilities, the race truck utilized its factory equipment across all 850 treacherous miles, including its stock engine, transmission, brakes, wheels with BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires – and even its factory air conditioning, satellite radio and windshield – often unheard of in race vehicles. The Foutz Motorsports team only added a chromalloy steel safety cage, puncture-resistant fuel cell, racing seats and full race harness to meet SCORE rules. The factory-spec Raptor springs and Fox Racing shocks were adjusted to accommodate the added weight from the safety cage and fuel cell.
Other production vehicle updates that carry over to the race truck include the high-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy body and high-strength steel frame, all-new six-mode Terrain Management System™ and advanced four-wheel-drive torque-on-demand transfer case.
Foutz said the team drivers quickly adapted to the performance of the Raptor engine and drivetrain, which was entirely stock. “We used the Raptor Terrain Management System to select Baja Mode and just tweaked two-wheel versus four-wheel drive depending on the terrain we were on,” Foutz said. “When we hit the road for home, we dropped it in the Sport Mode and took off for the highway.”
Ford Performance engineers used the Raptor race truck program as a platform to share technology and prove out their trucks in the real world. Jamal Hameedi, Ford Performance chief engineer says the testing helps to create exciting products that not only raise the performance bar, they deliver Built Ford Tough capability and durability.
“We’re completely thrilled at how well the all-new F-150 Raptor performed throughout the Baja 1,000 race as it’s one of the most brutal environments you can ever compete in, “Hameedi said, “Having race-proven, real-world performance experience and data to validate – further solidifies Ford’s truck leadership position and Raptor as the ultimate from-the-factory high-performance off-road truck.”
Ford Performance Expands as Brand Halo
Set to deliver 12 new vehicles by 2020, Ford Performance leverages its racing efforts and expertise to speed innovations on dedicated performance models and performance parts. The group works to quickly iterate the latest technologies that can ultimately be applied across Ford Motor Company’s entire passenger vehicle lineup.
The performance segment is a growing business for Ford, as the company recognizes a customer desire for vehicles that offer fuel economy, leading technology and a great driving experience. Along with F-150 Raptor, the Ford Performance lineup includes the Ford GT supercar, Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT350R Mustang, Focus RS, Focus ST and Fiesta ST.

TODCO Introduces WeatherTite Pro™: The Lightest Weather-Resistant Roll-up Door for Trucks and Trailers
New lighter co-polymer roll-up door is 100-percent recyclable.
Marion, OH (October 2016) – TODCO, Transportation Division of Overhead Door Corporation, introduces WeatherTite™ Pro, the next generation weather-resistant roll-up door for trailer and truck body applications. WeatherTite Pro improves upon the proven TODCO WeatherTite™ door that eliminated the problems of swelling, warping, finish delamination and rotting experienced with wood roll-up doors when it was introduced 15 years ago. WeatherTite Pro takes these benefits to a new level, utilizing 100 percent recyclable and highly engineered co-polymer panels that dramatically reduce weight and improve heat tolerance.
A WeatherTite Pro panel weighs 25 percent less than standard WeatherTite panels and 37 percent less than ¾”wood and ¼” plate-style panels, increasing payload potential. The lighter door weight will also allow the option of installing a long-life counterbalance spring that reduces costly downtime and maintenance costs.
Results of ASTM D648 Heat Deflection Testing at 66 psi conducted by TODCO shows WeatherTite Pro has a 23 percent higher heat tolerance than standard WeatherTite panels, reducing the opportunity for warpage in hotter climates.
Additional features of WeatherTite Pro include:
• Improved impact resistance
• Smooth panel surface – Allows for an automotive quality paint finish and excellent decal adhesion
• Automotive grade UV stability and finish color
• Anti-Pinch Panel Joint – Eliminates pinch point at panel joint to improve safety and reduce injuries and workmen’s compensation costs
• Anti-Drip Design – Prevents water from the exterior of the door from dripping between panels onto cargo when in operation and moving through the radius
• Interchangeable with current WeatherTite panels
• Available with 1” or 2” track and rollers
• 10-Year limited warranty
The list of available options includes 1” and 2” SupeRollers™ that have been tested to last up 5X longer than standard steel rollers and EZ Seals™, dual durometer side seals that reduce seal installation time by 50% compared to rubber seals.
The WeatherTite Pro roll-up door was previewed at this year’s NTEA Work Truck Show, ATA’s Technology and Maintenance Council Annual Meeting and Transportation Technology Exhibition, and Truck World in Canada.
Headquartered in Marion, Ohio, TODCO manufactures and services roll up doors, swing doors and walkramps for the trucking industry. The company maintains manufacturing plants in Marion, Ohio and Tecate, Mexico. For more information, go to www.todco.com.

2017 Ford F-150 Fuel Economy Improves
Ford just released EPA fuel economy ratings for the 2017 Ford F-150 with the second-generation twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost and 10-speed transmission. As a quick reminder, the new and improved engine makes 10 more horsepower (now 375 hp) and 50 more pounds-feet of torque (now 470 pounds-feet) than the 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost it's replacing. And although those numbers don't sound dramatically different, we can say the performance of the new combination — due in large part to smarter computer tuning — is impressive.
Here are the new EPA numbers: A 2017 4x2 3.5-liter EcoBoost gets 18/25/21 mpg city/highway/combined — it was 17/24/20 for the 2016. For popular 4x4 models, fuel economy increases to 17/23/20 compared to 16/22/18 for the 2016. For comparison purposes, the 4x2 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and base Ram 1500 naturally-aspirated V-6 models are EPA rated at 20 mpg combined, while the same trucks with the V-8 option (Chevy 5.3-liter and Ram 5.7-liter) have combined EPA ratings of 18 and 17 mpg, respectively. The half-ton pickup fuel economy leader is the Ram 1500 HFE with the 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel with EPA ratings of 21/29/24 mpg city/highway/combined.
The second-generation EcoBoost V-6 is the same engine and transmission combination that will be in the 2017 Ford Raptor, but it will offer 450 hp and 510 pounds-feet of torque in that pickup truck.
All axle gearing in regular F-150 models remains the same, as does payload and tow ratings for the various configurations and trim packages.

- Built Ford Tough
- Just as Reebok encourages people to enhance their lives through the physical, mental and social benefits that fitness provides, Ford empowers fleets and tradespeople every day with tough vehicles built to take on demanding jobs.
- Ford Transit features high-strength unibody construction and gives customers flexibility with 64 available configurations for 2017 – the most in its class. Built on a Transit 250, FitTruck has a high roof and 148-inch wheelbase, and is powered by a 3.2-liter Power Stroke® I5 Turbo Diesel with a six-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission.
- Two of Ford’s qualified vehicle modifiers, TransitWorks and Adrian Steel, worked together to transform this Transit cargo van – with 404 cubic feet of cargo space – into a relentless fitness machine.
- TransitWorks fitted the front of the van with four removable seats to comfortably transport the influential fitness instructors on tour, as well as a custom floor, lighting, headliner and partition. Adrian Steel custom-designed and built storage for a variety of fitness equipment, including dumbbells, barbells, weight plates, battle ropes, resistance bands, yoga mats, medicine balls and kettle balls.
“When duty calls, business professionals and commercial fleets want a vehicle with the rugged reliability to get the job done and a feature selection customized to their specific needs,” said Julie Ellenberger, Ford marketing manager for Transit. “Transit has a track record of taking on the toughest situations drivers can throw at it, whether navigating a construction site or an urban landscape. Likewise, embracing a healthy, fit lifestyle allows people to handle the toughest life can throw at them, both mentally and physically.”

Fuel savings with APUs
What makes auxiliary power units (APUs) such a good investment today? Bill Gordon, division president of Bergstrom Parts LLC, says that the primary reasons are “fuel savings and less wear on the engine as a result of reduced idling. The fuel savings associated with reduced idling are significant. Omnitracs released a whitepaper recently that quantified the amount of money spent on idling per year at roughly $14 billion. Battery-powered systems like the NITE unit play a huge role in reducing that number and represent big savings for fleets.”
“The Carrier Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) is an integrated heating and cooling system that provides up to 12,000 British thermal units per hour (Btuh) of cooling and 10,000 Btuh of heating,” explains David Kiefer, director of sales and marketing for Carrier Transicold, Truck/Trailer/Rail Americas. “The Carrier APU also charges truck batteries, warms the truck engine and is compatible with shore power.” He adds that APUs offer potential for fuel savings as well as compliance with more prevalent and more stringent idling regulations. In addition, fleets understand the impact an APU can have on reducing truck engine maintenance. Fuel prices continue to make compelling financial incentives to use an APU.”
“In addition to the fuel savings, with which everyone is familiar, the TriPac Evolution decreases tractor maintenance costs due to reduced idle time, which increases tractor resale value,” says Steve DeLarosby, product manager of APUs at Thermo King. “Perhaps one of the biggest benefits is how the APU helps with driver retention. Our customers are experiencing a significant shortage in drivers. The TriPac Evolution allows drivers to have access to the comforts home while still being on the road, which helps improve driver satisfaction and reduces turnover. By having APU on a tractor, companies can save money by decreasing recruiting and training costs.”
“While not technically an APU, our product line provides three things: heat, air-condition and alternate power,” shares John Dennehy, vice president marketing and communications for Eberspaecher Climate Control Systems. “Eberspaecher manufactures ‘Fuel Operated Heaters’ that can heat two mediums, air or water (coolant). We don’t produce cool or additional power. We all know that fleets are having a tough time attracting and holding drivers. These heaters can defrost your windshield keeping you safe, they use minimal fuel and they work just like a home furnace, where you set the temperature and let the heater do the rest.”

Ford Super Duty Customer Embodies Built Ford Tough Spirit
To help guide the design and engineering of the all-new 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty, Ford connected with customers through a special “Insiders” program to focus on receiving honest feedback from owners who use Ford trucks every day for everything from ranching, to farming and industrial work. Nate Berges, a participant in the Insiders program, owns several Super Duty pickup trucks, in addition to a fleet of chassis cabs for his family’s awning company, of which he is the fourth-generation owner. “Ford trucks are the only trucks I will every buy,” said Berges. “Ford trucks get the job done – period.” Berges had the rare opportunity to watch UAW-Ford employees build his new F-350 at Kentucky Truck Plant, where he was able to drive it off the end of the line.

Ford's Big Trucks Hauling in Big Sales: New 2016 F-650 and F-750 Trucks Have Best Year-to-Date Since 1997
- Ford, the only full-line automaker offering vehicles in Classes 1-7, sold more F-650 and F-750 medium-duty trucks in the first eight months of 2016 than all year in 2015
- Year-to-date sales of F-650 and F-750 trucks are up 59 percent versus 2015 and at the highest level since 1997
- All-new F-650 and F-750 trucks are available with the buyer’s choice of Ford-built segment-exclusive gasoline engine or diesel engine
Sales of the all-new medium-duty Ford trucks are up 59 percent year-over-year through August, with 10,160 sold. That’s the best year-to-date sales total for Ford’s largest trucks since August 1997.
The sales growth has come quickly: The redesigned F-650 and F-750 trucks rolled off the line at Ford’s Ohio Assembly Plant near Cleveland for the first time in August 2015. Ford shifted production to Ohio from Mexico in 2015 and invested $168 million in the Ohio plant.
The F-650 and F-750 line-up includes Regular Cab, SuperCab and Crew Cab body styles, as well as straight-frame, kick-up frame Pro Loader and a new dedicated tractor model for heavy towing applications.
“We’re seeing growing interest in the new tractor from beverage and hauling fleets,” says Kevin Koester, Ford medium-duty truck and Super Duty fleet marketing manager. “Giving our customers the choice of two exclusive powertrains, available across all body styles and designed specifically for the unique needs of the vocational truck market, has really helped drive sales of our new trucks.”
Ford remains the only automaker to offer a gasoline-powered engine in the medium-duty truck segment. The 6.8-liter V10 with 320 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque is available for both F-650 and F-750 models with the heavy-duty, Ford-built TorqShift HD six-speed automatic transmission.
The 6.8-liter engine can be factory-prepped for converting to compressed natural gas or liquid propane gas as cost-effective alternatives to gasoline.
Ford is the only medium-duty truck manufacturer that designs and builds its own diesel engine and transmission combination – ensuring the powertrain will work seamlessly with all chassis components and vehicle calibrations, and providing customers with streamlined service. The Ford 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8 turbo diesel engine delivers best-in-class standard 270 horsepower and 675 lb.-ft. of torque, plus available engine outputs of 300 horsepower with 700 lb.-ft. of torque and 330 horsepower with 725 lb.-ft. of torque. It is backed by an unsurpassed five-year/250,000-mile warranty.
“Towing and rental customers have embraced the gas engine, and others are looking at this powertrain for more severe service applications,” Koester says. “Our diesel customers are praising the quietness of the 6.7-liter Power Stroke® diesel engine. Not only is it up to 45 percent quieter in the cabin at idle than the outgoing model, it’s so quiet that customers have told us that there have been times when they’ve approached the truck in front of the grille and didn’t even realize it was running.”
Another feature resonating with customers, Koester says, is the TorqShift HD’s available Live-Drive Power Takeoff Provision. The diesel engine can crank out 300 lb.-ft. of stationary torque and 200 lb.-ft. in mobile mode, giving customers the power they need to operate a wide range of equipment on the job site. Diesel models can accommodate split-shaft PTO applications, as well. New for 2017 is the addition of mobile mode on the 6.8-liter V10 engine.
Toughest, great value and work-ready Ford medium-duty trucks ever
Ford F-650 and F-750 trucks provide the ideal combination of value, capability and upfit readiness in the medium-duty truck segment.
These attributes underscore F-650 and F-750’s position as the future of medium-duty trucks:
- Toughest: Fully designed and developed by Ford truck engineers in Dearborn, Michigan; robot-tested on taxing durability courses too demanding for human drivers; 500,000-plus miles of harsh dynamometer engine testing at extreme power levels and temperatures
- Work-ready: New upfit-friendly chassis developed in cooperation with leading industry body makers; clean chassis capable of accommodating vocational bodies with little to no modification saves time and expense
- Great value: Choice of segment-exclusive 6.8-liter V10 gas engine or 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel – both backed by Ford’s heavy-duty TorqShift HD six-speed automatic transmission enhanced for medium-duty use with great power, performance and efficiency; supported by a national network of Ford service centers to minimize downtime

Mobile charging truck rescues depleted EVs
An electric vehicle (EV) depletes its battery and is stuck on the side of the road without a charger anywhere in sight.
Getting towed is an option, but AAA has even a better solution: an electric vehicle mobile charging unit.
The white Ford F-250 looks like a utility truck, but make no mistake, it features that familiar an iconic AAA logo on the doors.
When a AAA member calls for service, the truck shows up with level two and level three charging options.
AAA will provide 10 to 15 minutes of charge time, which they report will provide three to 15 miles of driving range, or at least enough to make it to the next charging station.
Since being deployed in 2011, AAA’s mobile charging trucks have had thousands of service calls, according to electrek.co.
Not surprisingly, the charger trucks are available in metro areas where electric vehicles are used the most, which currently includes Denver, Los Angeles, Orlando, Phoenix, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle.

- Ford Motor Company Fund will contribute $700,000 to purchase supplies for volunteer projects, as Ford sees increasing participation in emerging markets
Hundreds of Ford volunteers will help rebuild a water system in the town of Chanthaburi that serves a school and more than 3,300 local residents. Ford volunteers will repair storage tanks and install new water purifiers, sinks and other restroom fixtures. In addition, the water will be used to help irrigate crops and sustain community gardens, also providing a hands-on learning experience for students and families.
“Clean water is a necessity – a basic human right – that is not always readily available in parts of the world,” said Jim Vella, president, Ford Motor Company Fund. “This project goes to the heart of making people’s lives better as we start Global Caring Month by harnessing the power of our volunteers to improve their communities.”
The Bill Ford Better World Challenge was launched last year as part of the celebration marking the 10th anniversary of the Ford Volunteer Corps. The initiative also awarded a $200,000 grant for the Nonprofit Mobility App, a mobile software application that works like a ride-sharing app and can be used to connect Ford volunteers and nonprofits with drivers and vehicles that can move food, building materials and other supplies to where they can do the most good for people in the community. The idea — proposed by Ford employees — will be created by the University of Detroit-Mercy and used by organizations in the United Kingdom and southeast Michigan.
“I am proud of the tremendous response we received when we challenged our employees to help build a better world,” said Bill Ford, executive chairman, Ford Motor Company. “These initiatives will help meet critical community needs and have a positive impact on the quality of people’s lives.”
During Ford Global Caring Month in September, some 20,000 Ford volunteers will participate in hundreds of community service projects around the world. Global Caring Month is the signature annual event of the Ford Volunteer Corps. Since it was launched in 2005, Ford Volunteer Corps members have contributed more than one million hours of community service in 48 countries, representing $29 million of in-kind community investments.
This year, Global Caring Month projects include:
Angola - Paint, repair and renovate a secondary school
Australia - Beautify the grounds surrounding a family retreat run by the Salvation Army
Brazil - Make repairs and renovate a nursery, daycare and library for children
Colombia - Overhaul food bank delivery area and sort donations
Germany - Design and develop urban gardens, help with construction work at a high school
India - Make renovations at a home for senior citizens
Mexico - Make improvements at an orphanage, build water storage and feed the hungry
South Africa - Renovate bathrooms, repair ceilings and doors, and paint homes for children
United Kingdom - Modernize and make extensive improvements at a mental health facility
Ford volunteers from more than three dozen countries have signed up for community projects, including a growing number in emerging markets from Cambodia and Malaysia to Guam and Samoa. In the United States, Ford employees will participate in more than 160 volunteer activities across 16 states throughout the month, including a Ford Accelerated Action Day on Sept. 16.
Ford Fund is also increasing its financial contributions to non-profit agencies during Ford Global Caring Month. Grants totaling $700,000 will be used to purchase tools and other supplies needed to complete many of this month’s community service projects.
“The positive, powerful impact this work has on people and communities is remarkable,” said Janet Lawson, director, Ford Volunteer Corps. “Each year a better world comes into sharper focus through the caring efforts of Ford employees and our nonprofit partners.”

Review: Knapheide platform bed is versatile and functional
It’s a great commercial van. Ample power. Low cabin noise. Great maneuverability. Top notch all the way around. But part of what makes Transit such a great worksite workhorse is its versatility. Available in three roof heights, three lengths, two wheelbases, with three engines options and in cargo van or passenger wagon configurations, there is a seemingly endless list of upfit possibilities.
Case in point, Knapheide’s Value-Master-X (PVMX) platform bed, which was fitted to a 2015 Transit 250 chassis cab I was recently able to drive. Featuring solid steel construction and available in widths of 80 inch for single wheeled vehicles or 96 inch and 102 inch for dual rear wheels, the platform and can be ordered in lengths ranging from 8 feet to 26 feet.
The PVMX comes with different flooring options – wood, steel, diamond plate or Polyboard – and numerous bulkhead styles.
My Transit test unit was equipped with 12 foot platform, 80 inches wide for the single rear wheel unit.
IMG_3415The Polyboard flooring – not susceptible to weathering and cracking – provided a more rugged surface than wood decking, and was lighter than steel flooring. As an added bonus, it looked pretty cool.
The platform featured an LED light kit, an ICC rear bumper and BHG Bulkhead – a drop in rectangular style bulkhead with a punched window for visibility that also featured reinforcing gussets on each side to increase structural integrity
Two 36 inch Roughneck underbody toolboxes were mounted one for each side, as well as an underbody tie down rail. This was more than ample room for my tools of the day: a suitcase and laptop case.
The PVMX is surely to be an attractive option for vocations who need to haul large items on the bed while needing to keep tools and other small accessories handy.
