150th Anniversary of Henry Ford’s Birth Celebrated Around the World

DEARBORN, Mich., July 30, 2013 – Today marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Henry Ford, whose innovative ideas revolutionized transportation and brought mobility to the masses. Henry Ford’s enduring impact is being recognized through events and declarations across the United States and around the world.
Celebrations at Ford Motor Company’s Dearborn headquarters today are being complemented by a special proclamation by the state of Michigan declaring this “Henry Ford Day.” In Washington, D.C., hundreds downtown and on Capitol Hill will mark the day enjoying commemorative cupcakes delivered by a food truck – part of a mobile movement Henry Ford would support.
While today’s events mark the day of Henry Ford’s birth, they are just part of a yearlong celebration of the man and his achievements.
Appropriately, given Henry Ford’s global impact, the anniversary of his birth is being commemorated in countries around the world throughout 2013. Some of the events include:
  • Dealers in 21 Asia Pacific markets have launched Ford Heritage month, transforming showrooms into exhibitions on Ford’s rich history
  • Ford of Germany marked the occasion with a series of five road rallies that celebrated Ford’s numerous automotive breakthroughs over the last 110 years
  • More than 4,000 people attended community events held by Ford in Romania
  • In Great Britain, celebrations were capped by the reveal of a restored statue of Henry Ford at the company’s UK Tech Centre
In coming months, celebrations will continue with additional events across the United States, Europe and South America.
Contributions to a better world
Henry Ford’s introduction of the automobile into the mass market transformed agricultural economies in the United States and around the world into prosperous industrial and urban markets. Many historians credit him with creating a middle class in America. His high minimum wage – revolutionary at the time – set a precedent for fair distribution of company wealth that influenced later management practices. For a timeline on Henry Ford, click here.
Henry Ford initially struggled to get Ford Motor Company on solid financial footing, but broke through with the Model T. The iconic vehicle debuted in October 1908, opening a new era in America. More than 15 million Model T’s were built and sold as Ford Motor Company put the nation on wheels.
The innovative spirit of Henry Ford took root in many other forms after the success of the Model T, including:
  • Moving assembly line: In 1913 Henry Ford introduced the first moving assembly line for cars. Within 18 months, the amount of time needed to build a Model T was reduced from 12 ½ man-hours to 1 ½ man-hours, ushering in the modern auto industry
  • $5 work day: To reduce high turnover rates among workers, Henry Ford more than doubled their pay in 1914, from $2.34 for a nine-hour day to $5 for an eight-hour day
  • Vertical integration: To improve quality, Henry Ford sought to own, operate and coordinate all the resources needed to produce complete automobiles. This principle, known as vertical integration, was put into practice in 1927 with the Model A
“What my great-grandfather established, especially his legacy of innovation, continues to inspire our commitment to a strong business, great products and a better world,” said Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford. “We are putting unexpected levels of technology within reach of millions of people, accelerating the development of new products that customers want and value, and driving growth by creating jobs and bringing the freedom of mobility to the world.”
Spirit of innovation guides Ford today
Henry Ford’s spirit of innovation continues to guide Ford Motor Company today, reflected in a lineup of vehicles as diverse as the F-150 pickup, Mustang sports car and Fusion Hybrid sedan. It lives on in technologies such as Ford SYNC, the company’s in-vehicle infotainment system, and fuel-efficient EcoBoost engines. And it echoes through employees serving customers across six continents.
Henry Ford died on April 7, 1947, at 83. More than 50 years after his death, in 1999, Forbes magazine named him “Businessman of the Century,” and in 2012 a History Channel documentary highlighted him as one of “The Men Who Built America.”
“My great-grandfather’s vision was to improve people’s lives by making cars affordable for the average family,” said Bill Ford. “His vision to build cars that are reasonably priced, reliable and efficient still resonates and defines our vision today.”

Ford F-250/350 Trucks with Westport WiNG™ Power System Now Available for Service Body Upfits

VANCOUVER, BC – Westport Innovations Inc. (TSX:WPT / NASDAQ:WPRT), the global leader in natural gas engines, and Knapheide Manufacturing Company, the leading full-service commercial vehicle body manufacturer, today announced an agreement that will set a new standard in the delivery of natural gas work-ready vehicle solutions. The two market leaders are combining their expertise to engineer custom vehicle bodies for the Westport-powered Ford F-250 and F-350 bi-fuel Super Duty trucks with box-deletes.

The Westport READY-link™ process, the first of its kind, is a unique mounting process designed specifically to allow the installation of custom Knapheide service bodies over the Westport WiNG™ Power System. Created with fleet customers in mind, Westport READY-link, together with the Westport WiNG Power System, offers cost savings for customers through the use of Ford's single-ship-through delivery system and the convenience of a single dealer contact.

"This is a breakthrough technology and design that will offer shorter upfit times and reliable deliveries to our customers," said John Howell, Senior Director, Marketing at Westport. "Our agreement with Knapheide and Ford allows fleets to add trucks that use a clean, domestic fuel while maintaining the safety and quality that our customers have come to expect. With all aspects of the final vehicle now under full warranty accountability, customers can have 'peace-of-mind.'"
Customers using Westport READY-link for their Ford F-250 or F-350 trucks can choose to upfit their trucks with the KNAP-Link 696-50J44-WCNG or Knap-Link 696-50FJ44-WCNG, Knapheide's most popular service bodies customized to fit the Westport WiNG Power System. The 600-series Knapheide service bodies offer rugged steel construction and external storage for tools and equipment. The external compartments provide protection from the outside elements and allow technicians to access their equipment without having to climb into the truck bed.

"With the KNAP-Link™ designed service bodies, we can utilize our extensive distributor network to bring quality upfits to our customers and integrate with the Westport READY-link compressed natural gas (CNG) conversion," said Chris Weiss, Vice President, Engineering at Knapheide.
The Westport-Knapheide agreement ensures an integrated original equipment manufacturer (OEM) experience for fleet customers, and provides uncompromised quality and testing of the installed bi-fuel system and service bodies. Westport READY-link process occurs alongside the Westport WiNG Power System on the Ford Super Duty trucks at the Westport Kentucky Integration Center, a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier audited facility, before the trucks are shipped to local Knapheide dealerships for service body upfit.

Westport READY-link will be available for order on Ford F-250 and F-350 box-delete trucks with the Westport WiNG Power System beginning April 1, 2013. The Super Duty trucks are equipped with a standard 18.4 or an optional 24.5 gasoline gallon equivalent Type-4 composite CNG fuel cylinder, the lightest, non-corrosive cylinder technology available in the market. Starting at an industry leading price of $9,500, the Westport systems are available exclusively through Westport-authorized Ford dealerships.

All-New Ford Transit Connect Offers Smart Cargo Solutions for Class-Leading Every-Day Load Carrying

  • All-New Ford Transit Connect delivers innovative loadspace features which enhance access and storage to create the most flexible and capable load area in the class
  • Transit Connect will be launched late this year to become the only van in class to carry bulky building sheets and load a Europallet via the side door; Kombi version offers unique flat load platform with rear folding seats
  • Load-through hatch in Transit Connect bulkhead ensures businesses can transport awkward items up to 3.4 metres in length

COLOGNE, Germany, July 5, 2013 – Ford’s all-new Transit Connect offers class-leading load-carrying ability to make work easier for plumbers, electricians and other trades.

The new Transit Connect that will be launched late this year enables businesses to load and transport awkward and bulky items with a load-through hatch in the bulkhead, fold-up front passenger seat and – via the widest opening in the class on the long wheelbase model (L2) – the unique ability to load a Europallet through the sliding side door.

A special profile at the top of the full steel bulkhead also offers the unique-in-class ability to accommodate 2.4 m x 1.2 m (8 ft x 4 ft) sheets in the L2 van; while the Kombi L2 offers rear seats which fold into a flat load platform.

“We watched tradespeople loading and unloading vehicles to make sure we got the design of the all-new Transit Connect just right,” said Stephen Lesh, Transit Connect chief program engineer, Ford of Europe. “This van is ready for anything. It can haul all manner of tools and materials – and transport a work crew in safety and comfort.”

Ford engineers developed the innovative load-through system to ensure the Transit Connect could safely transport long items such as pipes or rolls of flooring up to 3.4 metres (L2) and up to 3.0 metres in the short wheelbase (L1) version. This involved the development of a hinged access panel in the bulkhead and a special “fold and dive” mechanism for the outer passenger seat; creating a dished profile in the surface of the passenger seat back; and designing the instrument panel so long items could slide underneath.

The all-new Transit Connect also offers customers further smart features including:
  • Flexible dual passenger seat which enables two passengers to travel with the driver. The outer passenger seat folds upwards to allow large boxes on the cab floor, or flat to accommodate longer items through the bulkhead
  • Ultra-bright LED lighting for the cargo space, enabling it to function as a working area
  • Standard bodyside fixing points at waist and shoulder height in the load compartment, which allow additional tie-down loops, racking or framework to be fitted more easily
  • Functional mobile office features in the cab including Ford SYNC connectivity and generous stowage space; the inner dual passenger seat folds flat as working space, or flips up to reveal a stowage box
  • Versatile rear seating in Kombi and Double-Cab-in-Van models, with a movable mesh bulkhead; L2 models offer class-unique fold-flat seating for the second and third rows to create a flat load platform.
The all-new Transit Connect van offers total load volumes of 2.9 m3 (L1) and 3.6 m3 (L2) with full bulkhead fitted, or 3.7 m3 (L1) and 4.4 m3 (L2) without bulkhead including the front loadspace area, both measured according to SAE; the van has a maximum payload of up to 1,000 kg, matching the class-best figure. Deliveries of the new model are scheduled to start at the end of 2013.

Ford Makes a Special Delivery of Its 33,000,000th F-Series Pickup

Among major milestones in the world of pickup trucks, this one ranks near the top. Imagine producing more than 33 million of anything, let alone full-size trucks for the last 65 years. To put that into perspective, picture enough full-size pickup trucks to line up nose to tail, with a little bit of room to jump from truck to truck, to run from wherever you’re sitting right now TO THE MOON.

Sure, depending on how you cut them up, that’s more than 13 generations of light-duty and heavy-duty trucks, but it’s still impressive. Mind-blowing even.

Now imagine buying your dream truck, a 2013 F-150 Platinum you’ve been waiting months to purchase ever since you saw the first pictures (we’ll assume for the sake of the story, right here at PUTC). You purchase the truck at your favorite Ford dealer in Plano, Texas (Sam Pack’s Five Star Ford--the same dealership he bought his first Ford from in 1969) and then you discover that the pickup isn’t just special to you, but also to Ford Motor Company for very impressive reasons.

Sam Loria, a 76-year old truck guy from Princeton, Texas (just outside of Dallas), was, no doubt, quite surprised that his long-awaited new-truck purchase will forever hold a very special place in Ford Truck history. We’re hoping his truck got some kind of dash plaque or special accomendation he can keep in the glove box. Congrats to all involved.

What Is a Three-Way Tipper Dump Truck?

Dump truck design has come a long way since this vehicle was initially developed in the first quarter of the 20th Century. There are a myriad of these vehicles available at dump truck sales with designs to suit various applications. There is one notable design that took this basic vehicle to an entirely new level and it is known as the three-way tipper; it is a unique design innovation that revolutionizes how this equipment is used.

Comparisons:

Standard - The standard version consists of a steel box bed mounted at the rear of the cab that is held down by hinges at the rear end of the vehicle's chassis. The hinges allow the dump bed to be lifted vertically. A single massive hydraulic ram also connects the chassis and the bottom of the bed and provides the force necessary to lift it at a steep angle in order to empty the contents.

While the standard version of this vehicle is effective for unloading anything that has been collected in its bed, it has a few limitations. The dump bed can only unload through its rear end. This means that in most cases, operators will have to back up and maneuver to get the equipment in the right position to unload in the correct spot. Maneuvering the truck takes time and costs money for the extra fuel involved. It can also be a problem when the location for unloading does not have enough space for maneuvering.

Three-Way Tipper - While standard dump trucks can only empty their contents at the rear of the vehicle, the three-way tipper is capable of unloading on three sides. The two are similar in terms of the base frame design, as well as the bed, and they both utilize the same reinforced frame for stability along with a metal box for hauling material.

The feature of the three-way tipper that makes it so unique lies underneath the dump bed. The new design utilizes four hydraulic rams each equipped with a cross joint to permit movement. Raising two of the hydraulic rams situated on the right side of the chassis causes the bed to tilt to its left. In the same manner, if the hydraulic rams on the left side are raised, it will cause the bed to tilt to the right. For it to perform the same function as a standard dump truck, the operator can raise both hydraulic rams situated behind the cab to tilt the bed to its rear.

Advantages of the Three-Way Tipper Design:

Faster Unloading - With the three-way tipper, operators can reduce their unloading time because it eliminates the need to back up, maneuver and position the equipment just to get the contents to land in the right spot.

Conserves Fuel - Maneuvering the equipment for unloading burns fuel. Because maneuvering is usually not necessary with the new design, it helps conserve fuel.

Less Space Needed to Unload - Unloading in a tight space is one thing that drivers have problems handling. Backing up and maneuvering in a tight space can be dangerous. With the new design, operators may not necessarily have to back up every time, so there less risk of hitting anything that may be behind the truck.

The three-way tipper is a break from the conventional design of trucks normally sold at dump truck sales. With this new concept comes higher functionality and efficiency. It's no wonder that with all of these productive new features, more interest is being shown in the three-way tipper dump truck!
