Westport Wing - Ford Super Duty With CNG at 2013 Work Truck Show

This  Ford Super Duty / Service Body is Outfitted with the Westport Wing CNG Bi-Fuel System
Shown at the NTEA Work Truck Show

News Release

February 27, 2013

VANCOUVER, BC – Westport Innovations Inc. (TSX:WPT / NASDAQ:WPRT), the global leader in natural gas engines, today announced that its proven Westport WiNG™ Power System, a compressed natural gas (CNG) bi-fuel system, will be available for order on the Ford F-450 and F-550 Super Duty Chassis Cab trucks starting April 1, 2013. The trucks will make their debut at next week’s National Truck Equipment Association Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Assembled alongside the popular Westport powered Ford F-250 and F-350 trucks at the Westport Kentucky Integration Center (WKIC), a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier (QVM) audited facility, the new F-450 and F-550 trucks have undergone the same rigorous testing for safety and durability used by Ford for all its original equipment manufacturer (OEM) products. With the WKIC located adjacent to Ford’s Kentucky Truck Plant, the 2013 F-450 and F-550 trucks will use the same integrated transportation system as other Westport powered Ford products to reduce delivery costs to the customer.

Available exclusively for order at Westport authorized Ford dealerships, the Ford F-450 and F-550 Super Duty Chassis Cab trucks with the Westport WiNG Power System are delivered key-READY™ to customers and come with a warranty that matches the Ford warranty for all similar powertrain and emissions components.

“The expansion of our product line builds upon our proven technology of the Westport WiNG Power System and extends our product availability to a different end user,” said John Lapetz, Vice President Westport LD and Managing Director, North American Vehicle Programs. “With a higher degree of application flexibility and increased gross vehicle weight, the Ford F-450 and F-550 Super Duty trucks allow us to grow a solid footprint with customers who were not serviced with the Ford F-250 and F-350 CNG bi-fuel trucks.”

The new Ford F-450 and F-550 Super Duty trucks with the Westport WiNG Power System are an ideal application for fleets in natural resource industries, construction, delivery, public utilities as well as government and transit operators. The trucks offer fleets the opportunity to use a cleaner, domestic fuel that offers savings between 30 to 60 percent with payback demonstrated in as little as two years.

For commercial fleet customers that require the Ford F-450 and F-550 Super Duty Chassis Cab trucks to be equipped to handle various jobsite environments, commercial vehicle bodies can be used with the Westport WiNG bi-fuel system.

“In partnership with service body companies based in Louisville, Kentucky, Westport will integrate the Westport WiNG Power System on the Ford F-450 and F-550 trucks with second unit bodies,” said John Howell, Senior Director, Marketing, Westport “Many standard configurations exist for bodies with a minimum of 84CA used in combination with a tank pack and custom bi-fuel configurations can be engineered for virtually any second-unit body with a minimum order of 10 units.”

Starting at an industry leading price of $9,500, the Westport WiNG Power System is integrated on the 6.8-liter V10 engine of the Ford F-450 and F-550 trucks and offers a combined fuel range of approximately 650 miles (at nine MPG) with maximum CNG capacity (42 gasoline gallon equivalent) and a standard 40-gallon gasoline tank capacity. For customers who want to eliminate the anxiety of operating on natural gas only, the Super Duty trucks with the Westport system will run on conventional gasoline once the CNG fuel is depleted.

A Nice “Green” CNG Powered Ford Super Duty Pickup at the 2013 Work Truck Show

Ford reports that their commercial vehicle lineup has expanded with the industry’s broadest range of CNG/LPG-Ready offerings

Fleet customers, companies and municipalities are also making long-term commitments to CNG. For example the city of Indianapolis, the host of the 2013NTEA Work Truck Show has committed to shifting its cars, heavy trucks and police cruisers to a mix of electricity and natural gas, aiming to eliminate use of conventional gas and diesel fuels by 2025.

Vehicles capable of running on compressed natural gas or propane autogas have reached record levels, as businesses and commercial customers seek relief from constantly fluctuating gas prices. They report that sales of CNG/LPG prepped engines have increased more than 350% since 2009 as gas prices continue to fluctuate and CNG cost remains stable.

Businesses are using CNG-fueled trucks to lower their operating costs, with the payback period for recouping conversion upfit cost reported to be as fast as 24 to 36 months of in-use service

As gas prices continue to rise, CNG conversion is reported to drastically lower vehicle operating costs for fleet administrators. CNG is reported to sell for about $2.10 per gallon, representing a significant savings over unleaded regular fuel, selling for a national average of $3.78 per gallon according to the AAA Fuel Gauge Report. Ford reports that it will provide sustainable solutions for a broad spectrum of its fleet customers. They report that depending on application and usage, businesses can see payback for CNG/LPG systems in as little as 24 to 36 months.

And yet another benefit of CNG usage is that it can result in up to 30 percent less greenhouse gas emissions according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Affordability, Increased Efficiency and Improved Technology Helped Ford Capture a Share of This Growing Market

DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 28, 2013 – Ford is capitalizing on the popularity of all-wheel-drive technology, with its AWD sales growing 72 percent since 2009, outpacing the industry growth rate of 53 percent. In 2012, more than 20 percent of the industry’s new car and utility vehicles were sold with AWD systems.

Originally introduced on the 2013 Escape, Ford’s new intelligent AWD system is now available on Edge, Explorer, Flex, Fusion and Taurus, making Ford unsurpassed in the number of AWD vehicle offerings for a non-luxury brand.

Based on Polk retail registration data, nearly 37 percent of Ford vehicles that are available with AWD were equipped with the technology in 2012.

“All-wheel drive acceptance continues to grow in the East and Great Lakes regions, as expected, but nationwide AWD sales have grown, particularly in the Pacific Northwest over the past six years,” said Erich Merkle, Ford sales analyst.

The increase in demand by American car buyers is seen throughout the country, as improved technologies like Ford’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system is keeping customers calm and confident on the road.

In fact, AWD is the No. 1 purchase consideration for Ford customers looking to buy a small utility vehicle in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states – outpacing well-established factors such as reliability, value for the money and fuel economy.

In total, 20 percent of all retail cars and utilities purchased nationally in 2012 had AWD, according to Polk data. AWD sales were at a five-year high in 2012 in the East, Southeast and Central regions, with considerable growth also seen in the Pacific Northwest over the last six years.

Better system, same price
Even with the addition of an improved AWD system, Ford has not increased the cost for its technology.

“While we continue to make our technology better, this doesn’t come at an added cost for our customers,” said Mike Murphy, global small car and SUV marketing manager. “Ford is enhancing the confidence and capability that driver’s desire.”

The advanced Ford-developed software behind the new intelligent AWD system preemptively reassesses conditions about 20 times faster than it takes to blink an eye, readjusting the power split to give the driver the precise blend of handling and traction – at all times.

If, for example, the front of the vehicle is on ice and the rear is on pavement, the AWD system can send all of the torque the powertrain can produce to the rear of the vehicle, putting power where the driver needs it most.

Using advanced software and sensors, the system gathers data from 25 external signals – including wheel speed, accelerator pedal position and steering wheel angle – to deliver outstanding driving performance in both wet and dry conditions, as well as excellent off-road traction.

Ford Commercial Vehicle Lineup Expands with Industry’s Broadest Range of CNG/LPG-Ready Offerings

Sales of Ford trucks with CNG/LPG-prepped engines have soared more than 350 percent since 2009, as gas prices continue to fluctuate and CNG cost remains stable

Businesses are using CNG-fueled trucks to lower their operating costs, with the payback period for recouping conversion upfit cost as fast as 24 to 36 months of in-use service

From vans to pickups to chassis, Ford offers customers the widest selection – among full-line manufacturers – of vehicles factory prepped for conversion

DEARBORN, Mich., March 5, 2013 – Sales of Ford vehicles capable of running on compressed natural gas or propane autogas have reached record levels, as businesses and commercial customers seek relief from constantly fluctuating gas prices.

In response to increased customer demand for compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquid propane gas (LPG) ready vehicles, Ford has expanded its portfolio of product offerings in this growing alternative-fuel market segment.

“Since 2009, we’ve seen the number of Built Ford Tough commercial vehicles sold with factory-prepped engines for CNG/LPG upfit increase by more than 350 percent,” said Jon Coleman, Ford Fleet Sustainability and Technology manager. “To expand power of choice for our commercial customers, we are offering CNG/LPG prepped engines in additional vehicle nameplates – from the Transit Connect compact van up to medium-duty F-650 models.”

As gas prices continue to rise, CNG conversion can drastically lower vehicle operating costs for fleet administrators. CNG sells for an average of $2.10 per gallon, representing a significant savings over unleaded regular fuel, selling for a national average of $3.78 per gallon according to the AAA Fuel Gauge Report. As the commercial vehicle market leader, Ford aims to provide sustainable solutions for a broad spectrum of its fleet customers.

CNG is made by compressing natural gas, which is mainly composed of methane. It is stored and distributed in hard containers at a pressure of 2,900 to 3,600 psi. About 85 percent of the CNG used in the United States is produced domestically. Depending on application and usage, businesses can see payback for CNG/LPG systems in as little as 24 to 36 months.

Another benefit of this alternative fuel: Cleaner emissions. CNG usage can result in up to 30 percent less greenhouse gas emissions according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Companies and fleet customers are also making long-term commitments to CNG. The city of Indianapolis, where this year’s NTEA Work Truck Show is being held, has committed to shifting its cars, heavy trucks and police cruisers to a mix of electricity and natural gas, aiming to eliminate use of conventional gas and diesel fuels by 2025.

Power of choice
Ford, the best-selling commercial vehicle brand in North America, will offer the all-new Ford Transit range of full-size vans, wagons, cutaway, and chassis cab models powered by a 3.7-liter V6 equipped with a CNG/LPG prep kit to assist customers running their vehicles with these abundant, affordable, clean fuels.

Transit joins the current compact Transit Connect® van, wagon and taxi lineup; Ford Super Duty® pickups; stripped chassis, legendary E-Series vans, wagons and cutaways; and medium-duty F-450®, F-550® and F-650® variants in offering factory-prepped engines for CNG/LPG conversion.

The next generation of the Transit Connect range will add yet another CNG-ready engine when it goes on sale later this year, offering a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that is more responsive and fuel efficient due to its use of intake-variable camshaft timing.

Each Ford engine that is factory-prepped for gaseous conversion comes equipped with hardened valves and valve seats, and Super Duty trucks equipped with the 6.2-liter V8 feature a unique bi-fuel intake manifold to accommodate these cleaner-burning fuels.

CNG/LPG engine prep from the factory costs approximately $325 before the customer chooses a partner to supply fuel tanks, fuel lines and unique fuel injectors. Upfits run approximately $9,500 to $12,500, depending on fuel tank capacity.

The commercial truck market is composed of many unique vocations and vehicle requirements. Ford is collaborating with qualified upfitters to deliver completed vehicles under its Qualified Vehicle Modifier program.

Transit chassis cab features an enclosed passenger compartment and bare frame ready to accept aftermarket body modules ranging from custom cargo delivery to utility body. Transit cutaway is similar to the chassis cab, but with the rear of the passenger compartment open so it can be paired with specialty body modules such as shuttle or school bus bodies.

The chassis cab and cutaway will be offered in three wheelbases, 138, 156 or 178 inches, and gross vehicle weight ratings from 9,000 pounds to 10,360 pounds.

“No other automaker offers the variety and adaptability that Ford Motor Company brings to our commercial customers,” said Len Deluca, director, Ford Commercial Vehicles. “Transit’s best-in-class capabilities are combined with an extensive nationwide network of commercial upfitters to provide an unparalleled number of body choices to suit almost any job.”

Transit chassis cab and cutaway models join the industry’s broadest lineup of commercial chassis, which include E-Series cutaway and stripped chassis, F-Series Super Duty chassis cab, F-650 and F-750 medium-duty chassis cab and F-59 stripped chassis.

Power of choice
Transit offers a range of fuel-efficient engines, including a standard 3.7-liter V6, the same award-winning 3.5-liter EcoBoost® engine proven in the Ford F-150, and an all-new 3.2-liter Power Stroke® Diesel option.

Ford will offer the Transit 3.7-liter V6 with a compressed natural gas/liquid propane gas (CNG/LPG) prep kit to assist customers running their vehicles with these abundant, affordable, clean fuels. This 3.7-liter V6 is also engineered for optimal performance with E85 flex- fuel capability.
Each fuel-conscious engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission for efficient rear-wheel-drive operation.

Transit tested tough
The foundation for Transit cutaway and chassis cab variants is an innovative uni-ladder structure that combines the cab with a durable girder frame. The fully welded platform underpins 100 percent of the cab area, with frame rails reaching from the front to the rear bumper mounts.

Extensive use of high-strength steel in the frame, delivering up to 50,700 psi of rigidity, helps shoulder heavy loads while high-strength boron steel in the cab structure helps improve safety.

To increase adaptability, the high-strength steel uni-ladder frame can be extended with support plates, allowing an upfiltted body to accommodate additional cargo through extended length.

This extra-length body support is the result of the Ford Transit development team listening closely to fleet customer needs, responding with thoughtful engineering features that make the versatile Transit platform even more adaptable.

Transit cutaway and chassis cab models can be specified with a factory-installed towing package including hitch and lighting connections, as well as a prewire package for upfitted body lighting.

The cab area and uni-ladder frame rails of cutaway and chassis cab Transit models have been reinforced with boron to add strength and save weight, before treatment with advanced anti-corrosion coatings for maximum durability.

The all-new Ford Transit has been tested to the same standards as the legendary E-Series commercial vehicles at Ford’s proving grounds and in the hands of real-world fleet customers in North America.
