Ford Transit Connect Wagon Earns Government's Highest Safety Rating


    National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awards the 2014 Ford Transit Connect Wagon a five-star Overall Vehicle Score in its New Car Assessment Program

    2014 Ford Transit Connect Wagon offers owners comprehensive safety systems to help ensure occupant safety

    Transit Connect Wagon is available as a five- and seven-passenger people mover that offers the most flexible seating in its class

The 2014 Ford Transit Connect Wagon has earned a five-star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the government’s highest possible overall rating.

Last year, the European version of Transit Connect Wagon, known as Tourneo Connect, earned a five-star rating from the European New Car Assessment Program, the highest possible score from the consumer advocacy group. Transit Connect Wagon – available as a five-passenger or seven-passenger people mover in North America – went on sale here earlier this year.

“Transit Connect Wagon gives people on the go a unique-looking, fuel-efficient vehicle that also provides a high level of safety,” said Steve Kenner, director of Ford’s global automotive safety office. “The suite of safety and driver-assist features available on Transit Connect makes it a great choice for families and businesses.”

Safe and tough
Transit Connect Wagon’s driver and passengers are protected by its body structure – more than half of which is built with high-strength and ultrahigh-strength steels, including 16 percent boron steel. Transit Connect Wagon features driver and passenger side airbags for front-row occupants, as well as side curtain airbags for all seating rows.

Customers looking for a flexible people mover benefit from stringent testing conducted during the development of Transit Connect Wagon. The vehicle has been designed and engineered to meet rigorous global commercial vehicle durability standards – the equivalent of more than 3 million miles. This includes more than 250,000 miles of demanding on-road conditions.

Driver-assist and safety features
Transit Connect Wagon is available with a full complement of driver-assist and safety features, making it attractive to families and businesses alike.

Available driver-assist features include a rear view camera, and forward and rear-sensing systems. The rear view camera shows what is behind the vehicle on a screen located in the center dash panel. The display’s guidelines and zoom feature help the driver align the vehicle, which is especially beneficial when towing.

At low speeds, ultrasonic sensors in the rear bumper alert the driver to objects behind the vehicle, while front sensors warn of objects at the front. The closer an object is to the vehicle, the faster the beeps sound, escalating to a constant tone.

Industry-exclusive Ford MyKey® technology is also available for Transit Connect. MyKey can be programmed to limit top speed and audio volume, encourage safety belt use and restrict incoming calls and texts to a paired cell phone. MyKey encourages safe driving habits in new drivers and can also serve as a useful tool for business owners to help them manage their fleet.

The vehicle also features an electric windshield defroster – a series of heating filaments within the windshield that can be used to more quickly clear ice, snow and mist.

For Joe Dougherty, Ford Motor Company’s MyKey® technology is a feature his family’s construction company uses to help keep their drivers safe.

MyKey, a tool that parents of teen drivers can use to encourage safer driving habits, is also an attractive technology for many fleet managers. MyKey debuted as standard equipment on the 2010 Ford Focus; it is now standard on nearly all Ford and Lincoln models.

Dougherty, president of Kentucky-based Louisville Paving Company, said his drivers need to be aware of their surroundings, and must be able to concentrate on busy, noisy construction sites. Thirty of his company’s vehicles are now equipped with MyKey, which allows owners to program a key that can limit a vehicle’s top speed and audio volume, and encourage safety belt use. The technology also routes incoming calls directly to voicemail on paired phones.

Louisville Paving Company, which was started by the Dougherty family in 1949, is a full-service contractor involved in highway and heavy construction. Dougherty plans to purchase more Ford vehicles with MyKey because he wants to put his employees in a position to focus on driving, even when working on unpredictable job sites.

“With us, safety is the No. 1 priority,” said Dougherty. “These job sites can be high-risk situations if drivers are distracted by the radio, phone calls or texts.”

One of the most recent applications of MyKey technology is the 2014 Ford Transit Connect, which has become popular with businesses for its fuel efficiency and class-leading configuration options.

“MyKey has been a great tool for fleet managers, giving them a technology that encourages good driving habits for their employees,” said Megan Gillam, commercial vehicles brand and fleet communications manager for Ford Motor Company. “Many companies have safe driving guidelines for fleet vehicles, and MyKey serves as a reinforcement of some of those basic rules.”

Louisville Paving Company leases its fleet vehicles from Enterprise Fleet Management, which markets MyKey as a safety tool useful for businesses.

“The versatility of MyKey for fleet owners makes it a great feature for our customers,” said Kevin Kelley, Assistant Vice President of Business Development at Enterprise Fleet Management. “The feedback from our customers who select it as a feature has been positive, with several stating they’d like to have it added in future orders.”

Some of the features and settings on MyKey include the ability to:

    Limit vehicle top speed to 80 mph, or lower on some models
    Issue a warning when the vehicle is at or within 5 mph of reaching the preset maximum speed
    Limit vehicle’s entertainment system audio to 45 percent of maximum volume
    Sound a chime and mute the audio system until safety belts are buckled
    Route incoming calls directly to voicemail
    Issue an additional low-fuel warning when the fuel tank is one-eighth full

Looking Toward the Future of Truck Bodies

What will the commercial truck bodies of tomorrow look like? What will be different? What design innovations can we expect to see?

For clues on what the future holds in the commercial truck body market, one starting point is to look at what the automakers are doing, said Ray Chess, president of R.J. Chess Consulting LLC, an automotive industry advisory firm based in Oxford, Mich. Chess is a former commercial truck vehicle line executive for General Motors.

“OEMs are a leading indicator. To me, that’s your road map for seeing what will happen in the commercial truck and equipment sector,” Chess said. “The truck body manufacturers do not need to create a lot of new invention here because they don’t have to. They can piggyback off what the OEMs are doing. And, when OEMs get involved, they help lower the cost.”

Take, for example, the 2015 Ford F-150 pickup, which is 700-pounds lighter than the outgoing model by replacing traditional steel with a military-grade aluminum alloy throughout 95 percent of its body. According to Ford, the aluminum alloys, already used in the aerospace and other industries, not only make the new truck’s body lighter, but also stronger and more resistant to dents.

“The things we see getting utilized in light-duty vehicles — if and when it becomes cost effective — tend to migrate into bigger trucks and bigger truck bodies,” said Doyle Sumrall, managing director for the National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA), the association for the work truck industry. “I think we’ve already seen a transition in the last decade where, as truck chassis become more aerodynamic and use more modern materials, I think we’ll see that same sort of trend being adopted in the body industry over time.”

Bob Johnson, the NTEA’s director of fleet relations, agreed. “OEMs are developing the advanced material technologies and increasing their use, which means as the availability of these materials increase, driving down the price,” he said. “As the OEMs use more and more of these advanced material technologies, they are going to refine the technology and build the service and repair infrastructure to make the material more available and affordable.”

Utilizing Advanced Material Hybridization

If the automakers are a leading indicator for what to expect in the truck body market, then it’s not likely one advanced material — whether aluminum, fiberglass composite, plastic composite, high-strength steel, or carbon fiber — will be declared the sole winner in the foreseeable future.

The MY-2015 Ford F-150 incorporates other advanced materials beyond aluminum, such as high-strength steel that’s used in design of the truck’s fully boxed ladder frame to make it stronger yet lighter.

Johnson of the NTEA forecasts a similar trend with truck bodies, where one material does not fit all fleet applications or duty cycles.

“Moving forward, I think we will see more hybrid bodies. We’re going to see a lot of innovation in design in the area of moving away from an all-steel or all-aluminum or all-fiberglass bodies and start mixing and matching the materials and technologies to get the best features of all of them into one body — for weight reduction, corrosion resistance, reparability, and lifecycle considerations,” Johnson said.

Additionally, the increased cost of the advanced materials currently comes into consideration, and increased usage may drive these costs down.
Johnson added: “I can’t say the OEMs are leading the body companies because the body companies are really doing more in the area of fiberglass, plastics, and aluminum right now than the OEMs are. But, that being said, as OEMs get involved with it they achieve much higher volume, which drives availability and cost and knowledge of how to repair it.”

Creating High-Strength Bonds Without Welds

The increased use of lighter-weight materials in truck bodies may increase the use of high-strength adhesives versus conventional riveting and welding techniques to ensure an optimal bond. Used extensively in aerospace applications, these adhesives are ideal in joining dissimilar materials where welding may not be possible.

In the right applications, these adhesives provide greater bonding flexibility to achieve more aerodynamic body designs and reduce the number of welds to increase manufacturing efficiency.

“Once the adhesive technology matures, I think you’ll see more use of the adhesives in the truck body market, especially when you get into the advanced materials like the carbon fibers, plastics, and things of that nature,” said Johnson of the NTEA. “You can weld plastic, but it takes special equipment and skills, so why not bond it?”
